EZ Gun Drill
about
This is a low cost way to bore deep holes without having deep pockets. So far I've drilled 8in, but I'm sure it can drill 16in+.
Here's how it works: Tension on the springs draw the carriage back. A tool (drill bit) is inserted into the drill chuck on the carriage and the work (rod, to be barrel) is inserted into the opposing drill chuck. When tension is released the tool is pushed into the work as the work spins (turns). The advantage of springs makes it more difficult to apply too much pressure, therefore reducing deflection allowing for better concentricity.
Although, this process is quite slow compared to a lathe, you can get great results without having to spend hundreds of dollars buying a lathe just to serve one purpose of drilling bores.
